Case Study: Multinational Health and Beauty Care Distributor

It paid out in both higher redemption rates and lower costs for the ecoupons when compared to existing Direct Mail and so all-round was a very positive campaign and an exciting new technology - Client

Campaign Background:
The health and beauty care client’s ecoupon campaign was designed to gather key learnings on the effectiveness and execution of ecoupons. The campaign was 60 days. The client partnered with Priceline (retailer) to offer $4 off a shampoo or conditioner which normally retails at $9. The ecoupon could be printed at home or work and then redeemed securely inside any Priceline outlet within Australia.

The Challenge:
The client required a flexible ecouponing solution that would offer the consumer instant gratification, safeguard the campaign against misredemption (fraud), provide reliable and detailed tracking data and be redeemed quickly and simply at Priceline’s POS. The client also needed to measure the effectiveness of ecoupons versus traditional offline coupons and the success of ecoupons across the various online distribution channels.

Using the Couponstar Solution to Solve the Problem:
Couponstar’s ecouponing technology platform and support services allowed the client’s brand team to provide a user friendly process whereby consumers could conveniently print a unique and secure ecoupon. The technology platform used to deliver this functionality was invisible to consumers who simply experienced a “one click print.”

The Couponstar platform ensured that each ecoupon printed was unique and traceable back to the online distribution source, consumer category and down to the individual consumer. A secure online reporting interface presenting daily results was accessible 24/7 to the client.

The solution also allowed for a linear EAN barcode to be printed on the face of the ecoupon which was fully integrated within the Priceline POS system.

The Couponstar Technology and Delivery Method:
The client leveraged Couponstar’s ecouponing technology platform to support the creation, distribution, tracking and reporting of the shampoo and conditioner ecoupons.

The ecoupon was use-once-only when cleared at the point of redemption and the ecoupon incorporated the highest levels of security available to prevent fraud including device-level identification to limit prints, preventing the consumer from downloading the coupon as a file and encrypting the data at every turn incorporating 128-bit encryption. The technology allowed for a 30-day rolling expiration date printed on the face of the ecoupon to call consumers to action.

Business Value and Benefits:
The real-time functionality of the Couponstar ecoupon technology enabled the client to offer a strong and immediate call to action - ‘print now’. This not only resulted in instant consumer gratification but provided a persistent, physical reminder with real value.

The results of the client campaign greatly exceeded expectations. The client realised and learnt the following through leveraging Couponstar’s sophisticated ecouponing platform:

  • Ecoupons are more effective than direct mail coupons (ecoupon print to redemption rate was 21% whereas direct mail was 8%)
  • Significant cost savings of 70% as compared to the equivalent direct mail campaign.
  • Ecoupons Increase the effectiveness of online banner advertising by doubling the industry CTR at 0.4%
  • A large increase of new email subscribers.
  • Reducing the misredemption (fraud) to a minimum.
